New MANZ President

I see that the Motel Association of New Zealand (MANZ) will be confirming a new president at their 40th Anniversary conference in Nelson in a couple of weeks time.

Peter Nash after serving a tour-of-duty on the MANZ board since 2006 will soon be elected to the top-position.

He comes from a farming background, and was a shearing contractor for a number of years before moving into Wairoa in 1990, where he built and operated a Garden Centre for 13 years before taking on the lease of a motel in Wairoa.

It is fitting that Peter is about to take on the MANZ presidency at the time the association celebrates 40-years. He is able to draw on a rich local history from those that went before him.

MANZ's first president 1973-75, Neil "Chopper" Summersby came from just up the road in Gisborne.

Claude Allen was MANZ president 1977-79 and established the motel that Peter runs today, the classic 27-unit Vista Motor Lodge and Restaurant in Wairoa. (The iconic Allen family continues to run a motel in Hawkes Bay).

Peter's Coastie background dictates that what-you-see-is-what-you-get. P'nash as he is known, has a forthright communication style and it will be interesting to see what he brings to the table at what could be a turbulent time of change ahead.

We wish him well...
